Herdade do Sobroso
Herdade do Sobroso occupies 1600 hectares near Vidigueira, delineated to the north by the Mendro mountain range, to the east by the Guadiana river and to the south by the vast plains that extend beyond sight. This geographic harmony is the basis of its rich identity.
The Guadiana River, which runs majestically along the vineyards, has a strong influence on the wine profiles. The alluvial soil comprised of clay, loam and gravel, was formed millions of years ago by the river, and the climate benefits from this proximity to the river, which provides the fresh breeze that cools the vineyards naturally during the hottest hours of the day. This freshness lets the fruit ripen slowly and harmoniously, producing wines with complex, fresh and elegant aromas.
This river, which has such a great influence on the wines’ profiles, owes its name to the Romans who came here in the 2nd century B.C. and called it “Anas”, which means “of ducks”. Later, the Moors added uádi (the Arab word for “river”), making it Uádi Anas, which later became Guadiana, the “river of ducks “.
We created a strong and appealing identity for the Herdade do Sobroso range, which reveals the wines in an interesting and unique way, represented by this remarkable bird that continues to embellish the landscape.
