Basalto
It’s quite a sight, vines growing from lava soil and flourishing on the black basalt rock. These rocky, volcanic and mineral-rich soils, together with the cool climate, give Pico wines their unique characteristics.
Each one alone had little impact but, together, the 250 small producers in Pico, united in a Wine Cooperative, put the Lajido vineyards back on the map. Among the volcanic rocks that shield them from the salt and Atlantic winds, protected by the constant clouds that shadow the volcano like guardians, the vines grow beside the ocean, with the right dose of sun exposure, giving them the singularity of the volcanic terroir that makes the wines they produce unique.
